We recently made a Coconut Bird Feeder for our garden at Raglan Coconut Yoghurt HQ. It’s amazing how much the birds love it! Here’s how you can make one yourself.

Method:

  1. Start with a whole coconut from your local store. Drain the liquid by punching a hole in two of the three dark “eyes” at the top of the coconut. A screwdriver, drill, metal skewer or corkscrew works for this. These holes will later be used to thread twine through, to suspend the feeder.
  2. Using a pencil, sketch out the area you’re going to be cutting. In our picture above, you’ll see that we’ve removed roughly a quarter of the coconut.
  3. Using an electric saw, cut along the lines you’ve sketched. You should be making one vertical cut down to the centre of the coconut, then one horizontal cut roughly 90° from that.
  4. Now all you have to do is thread some twine through the holes at the top of your coconut, and your feeder is ready to hang! The birds will eat the fresh coconut inside, and you can also fill it with a combination of bread, seeds, honey, fat, peanut butter, and other bird-friendly foods.
